Spreading My Wings: Preparing the role of Tytania

This semester is unique in that I get to make my University of Michigan debut in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This whimsical opera has been such a fun and playful process to be a part of, especially getting to depict Tytania, the fairy queen. Based on the Shakespeare fantasy, this literary classic was turned into an opera in the 60’s under the brilliance of Benjamin Britten and librettist Peter Pears. I remember reading the full play in high school junior english and feeling amazed by the comedic character interactions. It outlines the complicated story of Athenian lovers who’s every day lives collide with the uninhibited world of magic. It begs the question, what would life be like if fantasy became reality and we all acted on impulse?………Both Britten and Shakespeare conclude that it would be entertaining and absurd. Podcasts Every Opera Singer Should Listen to

As singers we’re often directed towards conventional resources to help us on our journey (books, mentorship etc.) Recently, a dear friend opened my eyes to the joy of podcasts, many of which provide interesting ideas and reflections on the industry. Here are some great resources that I think every singer should check out and add to their database of info. Defining Success in an Ultra-competitive Field

With audition season in full swing, I’ve been reflecting a lot lately about my own career expectations and the messages the industry sends to young singers. As singers, do we praise one path to stardom? I’ll go to this school, do this young artist program then this competition and, “Tah-dah!!! Momma, I made it!”……. It could all be so simple…….

As time goes on I’m seeing that success comes in many forms. How one defines success depends on how it’s being measured. This measure of success is greatly dictated by the approach and perspective one has towards performance. As artists, we must ask the question, why is singing significant to us? Are we singing to be seen, to impress, to validate loved ones, restore self-confidence, or even because someone said we’re good at it?! OR, is it deeper than that?!

To know were you’re going you must first clarify “why?”

Finding the Perfect Audition Dress

Every singer would love to stumble upon a killer dress that makes them feel like a boss for performance day. In reality, dress shopping can sometimes be a task. As someone who personally loves dresses and dress shopping, these are a few ideas that can help when looking for something special:

You’re a baddie, so own it! Affirm your body, love your unique shape and work with the Lord gave ya. No-one else can be you! As women we should feel empowered to take risks with trying new looks and freely choose what makes us feel beautiful! At the same time, it would be naive to believe that every single style looks good on everyone. There are so many amazing options out there so have fun exploring what fits well, and suits your personality. With patience you will find it!
If you are addicted to a dress, but it doesn’t quite fit, making minor tweaks by getting it altered can make a world of a difference. Alterations are your friend! Repeat: alterations are your friend.
